Comment on Sega 32x Review: Zaxxon’s Motherbase 2000 by Kris

Yeah, this truly is a hidden gem in the 32x library. This and R-Type (SMS) is what got me into Shmups. After getting some more shooters under my belt, I really appreciate what a good game this is. Like I said in my Doom (32x) comments, I think most people play this for a few minutes and immediately dismiss it. This game is all about the hacking ships, something that is often overlooked (it's not obvious without reading the directions).

I also own Viewpoint for the Neo Geo CD. Unfortunately, I cannot get past the second boss so until my shmup skills get better, that review is going to have to wait a while. I hadn't played Viewpoint yet when I played Motherbase 2000 so I didn't get to mention any of the similarities/references. It's clear the developers were inspired by that game. Motherbase 2000 totally rips off Viewpoint's music as well.

Ah.. Another nice review. This is one of those 32X titles that tends to get bashed more than praised. I liked it quite a bit myself, actually, and, hell.. I even managed to finish it! I do agree with just about everything in this article and feel that while it's not not perfect, once you get the hang of it, it is a good bit of fun. And fortunately, it's not as mind-numbingly difficult as another similar title, the Neo-Geo classic, Viewpoint. :D

Thanks! I would be willing to bet most people haven't played this all the way through. You can tell because most people (and reviews?!) state it only has 15 levels, rather than 16 (17 technically, as there is a hidden level, though I have yet to successfully find it). If you play this game for more than 5 minutes, the bordered game window and average soundtrack will quickly fade, and the excellent level design, atmosphere, and controls will prevail. I doubt many people who bought this in 1994 were disappointed.

Thanks for reading!

These days, 32X bashing seems to be as rampant as ever, to the point where people even toss up this version of DOOM as something should have never happened. It may not be a flawless port, but it gets the job done. It is fast, playable, and most of all, fun--Like stated in the review, it IS DOOM, afterall. I'm glad to see someone finally giving it a fair, realistic/honest review!

This was actually my first experience with After Burner. I had a NES rather than a SMS growing up. Some games I have played in the past, and have fond memories of. But all reviews are based on a fresh play through of the title.

I do agree however, some games have not aged as well as others! I did enjoy After Burner on the 32x though, much better rendition of this game.

Im curious if you played these games when they came out or if you are reviewing them after playing them for the first time. I remember playing this game quite often on my mastersystem, before this I cant remember anything like it and imo would rate it slightly higher than you did. There also was a trick where you could just hold up/left and nothing will hit you for the first few lvls!

Great review man, great game for the Jag...
You really nailed this one down, solid review, I'd add one thing though, and thats the ability to play co-op.
Makes this game that much better.

Just stumbled on your site through a random Google search...
Love it, good stuff

I think that's a fair argument. But, you have hit points (hearts) and you upgrade your weapons as the game moves along... Still, this is my favorite 2D Zelda game. Stunning game.
